The Pier Aquarium

The most recent St. Petersburg Pier, known as the “Inverted pyramid,” served as a focal point for tourism in the area and closed in June, 2013 due to structural deterioration of the quarter mile approach leading to the Pier head. A new St. Petersburg Pier, called The Lens, had been approved by St. Petersburg City Council and was in the developmental stages before a citizen-driven referendum in August, 2013 halted progress on the project.

The Pier Aquarium is a non-profit public aquarium and marine education center located at The Pier in downtown St. Petersburg. The Pier Aquarium is primarily staffed by marine science students from Eckerd College, St. Petersburg College and the University of South Florida, College of Marine Science and is big on Education, offering a variety of fun, informative, and "hands-on" programs to satisfy the curiosity of visitors and students both young and old.  Fun and interesting topics include "Catchin' Critters Knee Deep," getting spun up in the "Web of Life," and discovering the "Bay in a Bucket".  The Pier Aquarium explores diverse marine environments from around the world, starting with  Tampa Bay and voyaging to the California Kelp Forests, the Caribbean and Pacific Coral Reefs.
